The Ground Has Shifted.

One of the most important elections in this nations colorful history will be concluded next Tuesday November 6th, 2012. Hurricane Sandy just battered and decimated the east coast, but the election is still the most prominant thought in the minds of most Americans. The United States of America is headed into uncharted waters. Our country throughout its history has often been thought of as the melting pot of the world. What exactly does that mean? What that means is that we are a nation of diverse cultures represented by people of every color and creed. For most of us this would include the statement of, "In God we Trust." This in my opinion is a strength. It is what has made this country unopposable when circumstances arise that question the motives of tyrants and dictators. Men who would trample on widows and children, the poor and those who are considered less fortunate. It would be remiss of me to talk about this topic truthfully without mentioning our own despicable past, where men who also espoused such ideas thought it profitable to enslave a race of people to accumulate wealth and live comfortably off the sweat of others. Time has dictated that we transcend such circumstances and after much internal turmoil and an arduous journey of self examination. We arrived at a better place and our nation healed and we are all better as a direct result.
It is now the year 2012 and we have come a very long way but the disparity between the rich and the poor is growing in leaps and bounds every year. The magnitude of social problems we face as a nation has nearly doubled and our politics has become so polarized that decades have passed without the resolution of a lot of the important issues of our day. What are those issues? Health care reform was one of them, our current immigration problems as it affects our Hispanic population is another. Homelessness in this country has grown to near immeasurable levels. We have dismissed some issues only to discover that we have others. The point that I would like to address as it applies to all of this is that there is a segment of our population that is on the wrong side of these issues. The problem I have with them is this. They have chosen to use tactics in the political arena that are reprehensible, demoralizing and downright hateful, and all of us as American citizens should be appalled and offended. One final thought, without mentioning a particular party we all know who they are.
I think our current President said it best during his inauguration when he said: "What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them— that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works — whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, or health Care they can afford, and a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end." So in light of this, in my opinion our goals and objectives should be clear. Be inclusive in our policies as they effect all Americans. Love thy neighbor as thy self, The golden rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Instead there are fringe groups of Americans who continue to stir up hate, dissension and ideas that promote separation not love and inclusiveness.
To be perfectly clear I am talking about individuals likeSean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Glenn Beck, Sara Palin and Rush Limbaugh. Also included in that would be the extremist groups of separatist and neonites, and others who hate people of color. In the year 2050 there is a segment of our population that is currently the majority that is going to become the minority. It is going to happen whether they like it or not. We should all be focusing on becoming more tolerant and inclusive, not looking for reasons to stir up hate and strife to divide us. This can only lead to the possibility of us imploding from the inside out. I don't think that this is the future any of us wants for ourselves or more importantly for the future generations of Americans. The ground has shifted, isn't it time to implement Gods vision for planet earth, not the one that the haters advocate of hate, chaos and destruction of the human spirit?
Very nice Craig and so true...YES, THE GROUND HAS SHIFTED!!!
