My Brother's keeper

I have often wondered what happens to human beings that makes them hate each other. We live in a world where some of the most gruesome crimes know to man have been committed out of hate. We have seen this play out since the beginning of time. The first documented case of murder transpired when Cain Slayed Able. As recorded in the bible in the book of genesis Cain and Able were the firstborn sons of Adam and Eve. Cain was a farmer of crops and Able was a Shepard of sheep. When they offered up their sacrificial offering to God Cains offering was rejected and Ables offering God accepted. The ending conflict that arose in Cain resulted in him killing his brother. 9Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?""I know not," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?" That is the important question, am I my Brother's keeper?

Just yesterday our President Barrack Obama made some remarks centered around the controversy of the deplorable killing of innocent Trayvon Martin. He connected it to his own experiences as a black male living in America. That the African American view of this situation is different because of our experience. This view uniquely qualifies us to have feelings of disdain. Ultimately we must become more focused on those things that unite us not those things that make us different. That is what brings us to this concept of am I my brothers keeper? This concept of am I my brother's keeper is important. It is important as we engage each other on a daily basis socially, it is important in the scope of our politics as we elect officials who are supposed to have the best interest of all Americans in mind. In today's political environment the rhetoric, and the hostility being displayed by primarily those on the extreme right is reprehensible. We also know that there is still a segment of the American demographic that holds views that are Cain like in context and are not in the best interest of blacks and minorities. I think president Barrack Obama said it best during his inauguration when he said; "what these people don't realize is that the ground beneath them has shifted." What we know is this. there are people out there who still hold these abhorrent views about blacks and minorities. But each and everyday there numbers are becoming less and less. The good old boy network still exist, but it's power base is slipping away each and everyday as more and more Americans reject their ideas about hate and discrimination.

I read an article this morning where in some bar in Wisconsin they tied duct tape around the neck of an effigy of our president and set it on fire. The message being sent here is one of hate and bigotry. You know back in the era of Jim Crow, whites with these type of views thought it OK to hang black men from trees like fruit. Also in Kentucky the Republican primary just elected Rand Paul to run for congressional office. He will be facing democratic attorney general jack Conway in the general election. They are running for the seat of congressman Jim Bunning on November 2ND. Paul has some views about the governments imposition of civil right s laws that might require further scrutiny, not just by blacks but by all God fearing Americans who know we are our brother's keeper. When asked about desegregating lunch counters, Mr Paul responded by saying; "Well, what it gets into then is if you decide that restaurants are publicly owned and not privately owned, then do you say that you should have the right to bring your gun into a restaurant, even though the owner of the restaurant says, "Well, no, we don't want to have guns in here." The bar says, "We don't want to have guns in here because people might drink and start fighting and shoot each other." Does the owner of the restaurant own his restaurant or does the government own his restaurant? These are important philosophical debates but not a very practical discussion."

Come on Mr. Paul you have got to be kidding me. Are you comparing black people to guns? We have now become some inanimate object, I suppose that is the way you would have to view someone to horribly mistreat them, as something inanimate, yea a thing. Cain viewed Abel's sacrifice as an obstacle to receiving God's blessing. Those on the extreme right of civil liberties for all Americans, and equal protection under the law, see some American citizens as obstacles to maintaining their power base. During the 50's and 60's they tried like Cain to simply kill off their problem. Cain used fratricide, they simply tried murder. Neither is acceptable or will work in today's environment. Am I my brother's keeper? Yes is the only answer going forward, this will allow for the kind of humanity God intended for humans to operate in. LOVE
