Quiet Time

Some time ago I went with a childhood friend of mine to spend some time with his dying sister. She was diagnosed with terminal cancer some time ago and is currently reaching the last phase of the disease. Ultimately this means she will pass from this life to the next. As I think about our visit this morning I can see no better use of my time. Our entire lives are spent pursuing all kinds of goals and objectives, most of them centered around self interest. They have there place but taking some out of our day to reflect and have quiet is crucial for spiritual development if that is important to us and today for me it is. As we sat and waited and watched his sister come in and out of consciousness I was reminded of the importance of quiet time.

How often during the course of any day do we take the time to reflect and thank God for the present moment. tomorrow is not promised to any of us and we all should realize the importance of being grateful for the good we presently have in our lives. Like are we healthy? Is our family intact, Do we have full use of our mind and extremities.? These can seem like small insignificant events until something happens that turns our world upside down, especially since we are living in a world full of uncertainties. When we see others going through life's problems, we should think if not for the grace of God that could be me.

The bible says that a man and woman's life is comparable to a flower or grass in this way. "15As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; 16for the wind passes over it, and( it is gone, and its place knows it no more." Each one of us must reconcile with the fact that we have a date with death. It is a reality of our existence in the human condition. Christians can take comfort in the fact that we have been given a reprieve from the finality of death because we are saved. We have been redeemed. Today I am thankful for quiet time. A time I can take out my day to just be quiet, reflect and appreciate the sanity of the here and now. all the while knowing trials and tribulations come to all of us but with God as my refuge and taking some quiet time I have the strength to endure them all.
